How to Maintain Your Outboard Engine for Optimal Performance
Your outboard engine is the heart of your boat, powering your adventures on the water and creating a smooth, reliable ride. However, like any mechanical system, they require regular care to stay in top shape.
Neglecting to focus on your maintenance can lead to costly repairs, reduced efficiency, and even unexpected breakdowns. To keep your outboard engine running at its best, follow these essential tips for routine maintenance, including oil changes, propeller care, and winterisation.
1. Routine Maintenance: The Foundation of Engine Health
Regular maintenance is the key to extending the life of your outboard engine and ensuring it performs optimally. Start by consulting your owner’s manual for specific guidelines, as different models may have unique requirements. Meanwhile here are some general steps to include in your routine as an outboard owner:
Inspect the Engine Regularly: Before each outing, check for signs of wear, corrosion, or damage. Look for loose bolts, cracked hoses, or frayed wires. Addressing small issues early can prevent bigger problems down the line.

Check Fluid Levels: Just like a car, regularly inspect the oil, coolant, and fuel systems. Low or contaminated fluids can lead to engine overheating or failure.
Grease Moving Parts: Always have marine-grade grease to hand and apply where appropriate to the throttle, shift linkages, and steering mechanisms to ensure smooth operation and prevent rust. 2. Oil Changes: Keep It Running Smoothly
Just like your car, your outboard engine needs regular oil changes to maintain peak performance. Over time, oil breaks down and becomes contaminated, reducing its ability to lubricate and protect the engine. Here’s how to stay on top of it:
Follow the Manufacturer’s Schedule: Most outboard engines require an oil change every 100 hours of operation or at least once a year, whichever comes first. Some performance or specialist engines can be more frequent so knowing your schedule is important!
Use the Right Oil: Always use the type of oil recommended by the manufacturer. Using the wrong oil can lead to poor performance or even engine damage.
Change the Oil Filter: A clogged filter can restrict oil flow, leading to increased wear and tear.

Remove Debris: Fishing line, weeds, and other debris can wrap around the propeller shaft, causing damage over time. Clean the propeller and shaft after each use if you can.

4. Winterization: Prepare for the Off-Season
If you live in an area with cold winters, proper winterization is essential to protect your outboard engine during the off-season. Freezing temperatures can cause water left in the engine to expand, leading to cracked blocks or other costly damage. Here’s how to winterize your engine:
Stabilize the Fuel: Add a fuel stabilizer to the tank and run the engine for a few minutes to ensure the treated fuel circulates through the system. This prevents fuel degradation and carburetor issues.
Change the Oil: Old oil can contain contaminants that may corrode engine components over time. An oil change before storage ensures your engine is protected.
Fog the Engine: Use fogging oil to coat the internal components and prevent corrosion during storage.
Drain Water: Flush the engine with fresh water and use compressed air to remove any remaining water from the cooling system.
Store Properly: Store your engine in a dry, covered area, preferably upright. If possible, remove the battery and keep it charged during the off-season.

We offer a large trailer to boat owners up to 30ft which can be a cost effective way to lift your boat for service in the Torbay and Dartmouth area, so we can service your boat in our workshop, alternatively we can visit your nearest facility. For a one stop service, we can arrange lifts, antifouling minor cosmetic repairs or detail cleans on your vessel at the time of service.
