Five Critical Outboard Engine Checks so the River Dart’s Autumn Tides don’t catch you out!
After years of servicing and maintaining engines on the River Dart, we’ve learned one thing: autumn doesn’t give warnings. Regular outboard engine checks are essential. One day you’re enjoying calm September waters, the next you’re fighting stronger tidal streams with an engine that’s been hiding problems all summer.
The River Dart’s autumn conditions can be truly unforgiving. Heavy rainfall, higher spring tides, unpredictable weather, and the transition from summer’s heavy use to autumn’s more demanding conditions expose every weakness in your engine. We’ve seen too many boat owners stranded because they missed the warning signs their engine was showing all along.
Here are five critical outboard engine checks that will help separate confident autumn boating from expensive breakdown calls.
1. Cooling System: Your First Line of Defence
What to check:
- Tell tail water stream is flowing freely and should be in most cases warmer than the river
With hulls having fouled quickly through summer, your engine is having to work harder to achieve similar cruising results in the autumn. More engine load equals more fuel, more air and ultimately higher operating temperatures in your engine. It is very important to ensure your engine is being cooled efficiently.
The warning signs: Steam from the exhaust, tell tail weakening or irregular flow, lack of power or a particularly ‘hot’ smell. If you’re seeing any of these, moor up safely and give us a call.
Professional insight: Smaller carburetor outboard engines don’t always have a temperature switch. So it is important to pay attention to the signs above. Larger or more modern fuel injected engines have temperature sensors as well as switches, but even the best systems can’t save you from a failed impeller. Larger mercury outboards equipped with Mercury’s SmartCraft system have water pressure sensors built in, this is a great way to tell if your engine is cooling efficiently whilst on the move.
2. Fuel System: Autumn’s Hidden Enemy
What to check:
- Fuel filters
- Water separators
- Fuel quality in your tank
Summer’s condensation has been building in your fuel tank all season. Autumn’s temperature swings accelerate phase separation, especially in E10 fuels. That moisture is now sitting at the bottom of your tank, waiting to get sucked into your engine during autumn’s more aggressive boating conditions.
The warning signs: Engine stumbling at idle, difficulty starting, rough running or hesitation when you push the throttles forward. These aren’t minor annoyances – they’re warnings of expensive fuel system damage.
Professional insight: This is where something like ASPEN fuel proves its worth. Unlike standard petrol with ethanol, ASPEN doesn’t attract moisture and won’t phase-separate in your tank. The cost difference pays for itself the first time you avoid a fuel system cleaning bill.
3. Battery and Electrical: When Cold Weather Hits Hard
What to check:
- Battery voltage under load
- Connection corrosion
- Charging system performance
A saltwater environment is particularly brutal on electrical systems, and autumn’s first cold mornings expose every weak connection. A battery that seems fine in summer warmth can fail completely when autumn temperatures drop and you need maximum starting power.
The warning signs: Slow cranking, dashboard lights dimming during start attempts, or that clicking sound when you hit the starter. Don’t ignore these – they’re your engine crying for help.
Professional insight: A lot of modern larger engines (petrol/diesel) need can be very voltage dependent in the critical start up procedure. Especially on a cold morning.
4. Engine Oil: Summer’s Contamination Story
What to check:
- Oil level
- Colour, consistency, and any metallic particles
Summer boating creates contamination you can’t see. The rivers’ environment introduces salt, moisture, and fine particles that break down oil protection. Autumn’s more demanding conditions – stronger currents, longer runs, higher loads – need fresh oil protection.
The warning signs: Oil that looks black or feels gritty, unusual engine noise, or oil levels dropping between checks. These indicate your engine is working harder than it should.
Professional insight: If you are laying your boat up for the winter, we recommend an oil change to remove the years carbonated engine oil. The quality of the oil you put in matters too, we will only supply and use manufacturers recommended oils and suggest owners do the same.
5. Drive System: The Forgotten Component
What to check:
- Propeller condition
- Lower unit oil
- Steering system operation
Everyone checks their engine, but the drive system takes the real punishment. In autumn, that summer fouling is a real consideration. The additional load and potential river debris can stress propellers, gearboxes, and steering systems that have already been working hard for you all summer.
The warning signs: Vibration at all RPMs, difficulty steering or unusual noises heard when shifting gears. These problems worsen quickly under autumn’s demanding conditions.
Professional insight: Most Mercury Mercruiser stern drives will have a gear oil monitor bottle attached to the engine, not only is it important to be familiar with this in your boat for colder weather, it should form part of your start-up pre-checks.
